New York Income Tax for Multi-App Gig Workers
New York State taxes your net self-employment profit as ordinary income using nine rates from 4% to 10.9%. For single filers, the 2025 schedule charges 4% on the first $8,500, 4.5% up to $11,700, 5.25% up to $13,900, 5.5% up to $80,650 and 6% up to $215,400, with higher rates above that. The standard deduction is $8,000 for single filers, $16,050 for married couples filing jointly and $11,200 for heads of household. New York starts from federal adjusted gross income, so the deduction for half of your self-employment tax carries over. You can find the official tables on the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website.
New York has other layers that matter if you live or work in the city. New York City residents pay a city income tax on top of the state tax (roughly 3% to 3.9% of taxable income), and Yonkers residents pay a surcharge. Self-employed people in the New York City area with net earnings above $50,000 may also owe the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax. This calculator estimates state tax only and does not include these local taxes, so New York City gig workers should expect a higher total bill.
How This New York Calculator Works
Net profit = Total gross − (Combined miles × $0.76) − Shared expenses
Self-employment tax = Net profit × 92.35% × 15.3%
Federal income tax = 2026 brackets on (Net profit − ½ SE tax − Standard deduction − QBI deduction)
New York income tax = New York rate schedule on (Net profit − ½ SE tax − New York standard deduction)
The calculator uses the 2026 federal tables and the $0.76 standard mileage rate (72.5¢ before July 1, 2026, with one rate applied to all miles). New York's tax uses its 2025 schedule, the latest we could verify. Read our full methodology for sources and limits.
Worked Example: Uber, DoorDash and Instacart in New York
Scenario: a single driver living in New York with $18,000 from Uber, $9,000 from DoorDash and $6,000 from Instacart ($33,000 total), 22,000 combined miles and $1,200 of shared expenses. No other income.
- Mileage deduction: 22,000 × $0.76 = $16,720. Net profit: $33,000 − $16,720 − $1,200 = $15,080.
- Self-employment tax: $15,080 × 92.35% × 15.3% = $2,131.
- Federal income tax: $0 after the standard deduction.
- New York income tax: $241 (adjusted income of $14,015 less the $8,000 state standard deduction, taxed at the New York rates).
- Total tax: $2,371, or about $593 to set aside each quarter. Net take-home pay is $12,709.
For the same income, a state with no income tax would produce a total of $2,131, so New York adds about $241.

Other New York Taxes and Rules to Know
- New York City taxes. City residents owe city income tax, and businesses operating in the city may owe the Unincorporated Business Tax once their income passes a threshold. Neither is included here.
- Commuter tax (MCTMT). Self-employed people in the New York City commuting area with net earnings above $50,000 may owe this additional tax.
- Sales tax for sellers. Etsy and other marketplaces generally collect New York sales tax on your behalf. If you sell goods directly, you may need a certificate of authority.
- Rate changes. New York adjusts its rate schedule from time to time. This estimate uses the 2025 schedule, the latest we could verify, so confirm current rates with the state before filing.
